I love this book, It was a book that I couldn't put down the whole weekend. The suspense and the mystery in the story is very intriguing. I can't recommend this book enough. In this story we follow Lane Roanoke and her journey back to the home her mother grew up in. When Lane is fifthteen her mother Camilla commits suicide, afterwards her grandparents send for her to come live with them at their estate in Osage Flats, Kansas. What Lane doesn't know is the secrets the house keeps, that has lasted several decades and the reason why every Roanoke girl has either ran away or died young.
When Lane arrives she has mixed feelings, but mostly one of belonging. She finally has a family to belong to and a place to finally call home since it was just her and her mom, and they were not living in the best conditions. When she gets to the estate, she is greeted by her free spirited cousin Allegra who is just six months younger than her, and meets her grandparents for the first time. During her summer there, her and Allegra bond. Allegra shows Lane what it means to be a Roanoke. They are the richest and most beautiful girls in town and Lane even falls in love with a guy around town named Cooper. In this coming of age tale shrouded in mystery Lane's summer at Roanoke is one that she will always remember.
Lane returns eleven years later to Roanoke after leaving the one summer she spent there after receiving a phone call from her grandfather that she come back, because Allegra is missing. Lane returns reluctantly to find her cousin Allegra. When she returns old wounds are opened, secrets are discovered, and old flames reignite. I won't give you too much information because this novel doesn't come out until early next year. But, I will tell you the author's imagery is amazing. The details of the Roanoke estate and the small town in Kansas make you feel like your actually living there with Lane, experiencing everything she does.
The characters are written wonderfully, they are well developed with a lot of depth. Cooper and Lane's relationship was tumultuous to say the least, but you can also say that about the relationship that Lane and Allegra shared. Lane's character is not typically likable, she has a lot of flaws and makes a lot of mistakes that you just want to scream at her through the pages, but you will root for her because you will figure out that she was just misguided and lacked a lot of love in her life. This is a twisted tale that weaves though generations. It is a much disturbing as it is intriguing. This story will keep you guessing until the very end and you will not want to put this story down. This is definitely something I could see as a movie. It is thought evoking and would be portrayed very well on screen. So please get this, the release date is March 2017. Execs get on your jobs and buy the options before the release, so it can be in production already!
