I received The Veil by Chole Neill from Netgalley in exchange for my review and of course I loved the book so much that I decided to put it on my blog! This is a perfect start to a great series, so good I think it would be a great television series. I saw that there would be at least 3 books in this series, but I really hope there are more to come after that, I'm very sure it would be just as good as the Chicagoland series which I also blogged about and think should be made into a series. The Veil could be like a spin off series, like how the tv series, The Originals is a spin off of The Vampire Diaries. Well anywho, without further ado let me introduce to you my review.
This amazing book takes place in New Orleans and centered around Claire Connolly, she's a Sensitive- a human that has been gifted with magic that came through the veil, but magic is illegal and if caught doing magic you are sent to Devil's Isle where you will be a prisoner. The Veil is what separated the human world from what was beyond and 7 yrs earlier the veil ripped open, causing an all out war with humans and the paranormal. Claire owns a store in the French Quarter, she inherited from her father and is the last living blood line of her name, both of her parents are deceased, so Claire is on her own besides her best friends Gunnar and Tadji. Claire is always cautious and in the moment of trying to do the right thing, she uses her magic to save a life and in doing so, she is spotted by a bounty hunter named Liam Quinn, but he is not what she expected, Liam ends up helping her instead of turning her in to Containment(basically the police) and getting her in contact with the right people to help her hone in her powers and acquire some skills. At first, Claire is very reluctant, she is prejudice when it comes to the paranormal, she didn't like them and didn't like the fact that she had these powers as a result of the veil opening, but Liam convinced her to be open about it and in doing so, she finds out that everything she has been told was not exactly the truth, then she realizes that she has misjudged all these years and from there, her and Liam work together to unravel the conspiracy of what is happening within the community with recent attacks on its citizens.
I really love the way Chole Neill writes, she created a great back story so you really know what's going on in the present. She explained in great detail on how New Orleans looked before the war and how it looked and was afterwards. She built up the story, where you can see potential villains and allies that would possibly be in the next book. I also like how she makes Claire and Liam love interests realistic, its not instalove, it will probably get to that swoon worthy love later but I like how its building up, the flirting and the caring and the lusting, that is what getting to know each other is all about. Chloe makes this story relatable to the audience as though you were right there with the characters. I saw some people giving this story 3 & 4 stars but I disagree, I gave it 5 STARS simply because it deserved it. Every story has a great back story and this story is no different, it created a foundation for the series, the upcoming action and subplots, they will all be centered around this 1st book. And that is what makes or breaks a great series on and off the big screen. Please get your copy Aug 4th! I promise you it will be well worth it.
